Project Overview

Troy is a real estate broker at Modern Asheville Real Estate with a serious creative life running alongside his professional work. Photography is the one he wanted the world to see. Troy needed a personal portfolio site that reflected that creative identity — entirely separate from his real estate presence, and built around letting the photography speak for itself.

The brief was clear and focused: a clean, fast, and easy-to-navigate portfolio that felt personal and intentional without feeling amateur. I handled the full design and setup on SmugMug, organizing Troy's work into a minimal, focused portfolio experience built to give his photography the presentation it deserved.

Objectives

  • Design and build a personal photography portfolio that was clean and minimal, with no visual noise competing with the photos

  • Organize his work into a coherent, navigable gallery structure

  • Create an experience that felt personal and considered within SmugMug's platform constraints

  • Deliver a site that was separate in identity and tone from Troy's professional real estate presence

  • Complete and deliver the project ahead of schedule

With a photography site, the design's whole job is to disappear. Anything that competes with the images for attention is a mistake. SmugMug adds another layer — it's a platform with real limits on what you can touch — so the challenge became making those limits feel like a choice, not a constraint. Troy's photography also spans a wide range of subjects, and organizing that range without losing its breadth or burying the viewer took real editorial judgment.

The Challenge

With a photography portfolio, the whole job of the designer is almost always the same: getting out of the way. Design that competes for attention with the images does more harm than good. SmugMug adds another layer — it's a platform with real limits on what you can touch — so the challenge became making those limits feel like a choice, not a constraint. Troy's photography also spans a wide range of subjects and styles. Organizing that range into a coherent, navigable portfolio — without either over-editing (losing the breadth) or under-editing (showing too much) — required thoughtful decisions at every stage.

My Responsibilities

  • Overall portfolio design: layout, visual tone, typography, and aesthetic direction

  • Gallery organization and content structure, deciding how work was grouped and sequenced

  • Navigation and user experience design — keeping it simple, intuitive, and image-first

  • SmugMug configuration and setup: applying the design direction within the platform's constraints

Approach & Process

Before touching any design, I spent time understanding what Troy actually wanted this site to do — a portfolio meant to attract new photography clients needs different choices than one built purely as a personal, creative statement. The direction that followed was deliberately restrained and minimal: clean white space, simple typography, nothing shouting over the work. If an element wasn't serving the photos, it didn't make the cut.

SmugMug's platform really does limit what can be built — but those constraints were worked with, not around. Gallery groupings, navigation labels, and page flow were all designed to feel considered and clean within what the platform allowed. The result is a site that feels intentional even though it's built on a templated platform.

Outcome

Troy received a clean, minimal photography portfolio that reflected his creative identity and gave his work a presentation it deserved and could be proud of. The project was also delivered ahead of the agreed schedule.

"Paul was great. He was a clear communicator and asked great questions throughout the process. He delivered a clean aesthetic and came in ahead of schedule. I plan to work with him again."
